SUMMARY:Don Tapio Scholarship Deadline - 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties Master Gardeners Don Tapio Scholarship is named for the man who is the epitome of “paying it forward”. He went on to a successful 36-year career as a Washington State University extension agent\, never forgetting the garden clubs which helped him in his time of need. He supported local garden clubs and the early Master Gardener program and delivered hundreds of public speaking engagements as a way to say thank you. SUMMARY:1st Saturday - Gardening While Aging
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to get to work putting your garden to bed for the winter. But are your muscles feeling a little stiff\, your knees a little sore\, and the strength required to tackle this task causing you to pause and question your abilities? Then you might want to join the Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties Master Gardeners at this 1st Saturday workshop where we’ll be discussing gardening while aging. \nThe event takes place Saturday\, November 2nd. Presentations are scheduled from 10:00 to 11:00 AM\, followed by questions/answers and discussion until Noon at the Grays Harbor County Extension Office\, 34 Elma McCleary Road\, in Elma. The Extension office is co-located with the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds. As always\, registration is free along with parking. \nMaster Gardeners have some great information to share about helpful ergonomic tools\, techniques\, and tricks to make gardening more enjoyable and accessible as we age. Gardening is great exercise but unless you’re a faithful participant\, it can result in aches and pains. Presenters will show you how to avoid those problems using proper pruning shears\, shovels\, and extendable handles\, just to name a few tools. Making the garden more accessible will be another topic of conversation you won’t want to miss. \nAnd it’s always important to remember the Master Gardener’s motto\, “Right Plant\, Right Place.” They will help you develop an eye for plants that will work best for your circumstances and introduce you to some plants you may not be know. And there is always time for your questions and comments. Come prepared to be re-energized in creating the garden of your dreams – at any age!

SUMMARY:Water-wise Gardening for SW Washington
DESCRIPTION:Join the Master Gardeners on Saturday\, July 13th at 10:00 AM to learn more about water-wise gardening in southwest Washington. This workshop will be held at the 1st Lutheran Church\, located at 103 Adams St\, South Bend (at the Corner of E Water & S Adams Streets). \nSouthwest WA soils offer challenges to local gardeners envisioning dense\, colorful flowerbeds and bountiful vegetable gardens. Yet the warmer\, drier summer days with limited rain fall often stress your plants. \nLearn practical ways of reducing water use in your garden\, maximizing soil moisture for plant use\, protecting the quality of our valuable groundwater and getting the most out of composts\, fertilizers and other soil amendments. \nAfter the workshop join us in the community garden to see how selected water-wise techniques are used in the WSU Master Gardener Demonstration beds.\n \nFor more information\, contact Elena Righettini at mrighettini@yahoo.com \nReasonable accommodations will be made for persons with disabilities and special needs who contact Toni Gwin\, WSU Extension\, P.O. Box 88\, South Bend\, WA 98586\, 360 875-9331; tgwin@wsu.edu at least two weeks prior to the event. \nWSU Extension programs and employment are available without discrimination. SUMMARY:2019 Master Gardener Don Tapio Scholarship
DESCRIPTION:The Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties Master Gardeners Don Tapio Scholarship is named for the man who is the epitome of “paying it forward”. As a young man Don almost had to quit college when his father lost his job at a plywood plant\, but his Professor of Horticulture\, Elwood Walter Kalin Sr\, saved the day by arranging for Don to receive a scholarship from the Washington Federation of Garden Clubs. He went on to a successful 36-year career as a Washington State University extension agent\, never forgetting the garden clubs which helped him in his time of need. He supported local garden clubs and the early Master Gardener program and delivered hundreds of public speaking engagements as a way to say thank you. Though retired\, he continues to support the Olympia Garden Club with trees and cuttings for their annual holiday wreath sales that provide grants to Thurston County communities. \nAmount of Award:\nOne $1000 scholarship annually \nScholarship Application (expired) \nApplication must be by postmarked May 1\, 2019 or dropped off at the WSU Extension Grays Harbor County office.
